The Saucier Family - Page 25
Since some have asked about the connection of the Saucier family to the old town of Handsboro, here is our only connection, other than numerous family members living in that community at one time or another. The community of Handsboro, Mississippi, now part of the city of Gulfport, was settled in the early 1840’s and one of its earlier settlers was the Hand family from the state of New York. Brothers Loren Hand and Miles Hand, along with Mile’s wife Helen Doud, and their two young sons, Porter and Stephen, came to the Handsboro area settling along the Bayou Bernard on its north shore. At this time the area was known as Buena Vista. Miles Hand established the first foundry at Buena Vista located on the north side of Bayou Bernard as well as a saw mill. The Hand brothers manufactured Saw Mill machinery at their foundry and well as other types of machinery and supplied the coastal area with their equipment. Later in the 1840’s the town of Buena Vista was renamed "Handsboro" in honor of Miles and Loren Hand and their family. In 1892, Porter B. Hand, the younger son of Miles and Helen Doud Hand, after his first wife’s death, married his second wife, Marie Ann Adam. Marie Ann was the daughter of Annie Victoria Lizana and Peter William Adam, granddaughter of Marie Louise Saucier and Ramon Sebastiano Lizana, great granddaughter of Philippe Saucier and Mary Louise Nicaise as well as a 2nd great-granddaughter of Henri Saucier and Barbe LaCroix Saucier and the 3rd great granddaughter of Jean Baptiste Saucier and Gabrielle Savary of Colonial Mobile.
