Jean Baptiste Vifvarenne
Half bother of Henri, Jean Baptiste, Jacques, Francois and Anne Saucier
After the death of Jean Baptiste Saucier in 1716, at Mobile, Marie Gabrielle Savary, our Saucier family matriarch, married her second husband, Pierre Vifvarenne, a Sergeant in the French Army, stationed at the fort in Mobile. He was a native of Amiens, France. Their only child, a son, Jean Baptiste Vifvarenne, was born at Mobile on February 25, 1719 shortly after his father’s death in late 1718. He was also baptized on February 25, 1719 at Mobile and his godfather was Jean Baptiste Raguet, Notary of the settlement and his godmother was Catherine Christophe.
Jean Baptiste Vifvarenne was the sole person, after the death of his father, on this continent with the surname of Vifvarenne.
After Gabrielle’s death on 27 October 1735 and her funeral services at Saint Louis Cathedral, Henry (Henri), the oldest of the sons, took charge of Gabrielle’s estate, with the agreement of his brothers that some items of the estate would be sold to pay part of their mothers debt to the Company of the Indies. They also obligated themselves to pay the remainder of the debt in five equal payments over five years.
Jean Baptiste, who would have been around 16 years old at the time of his mother’s death, could hardly be left managing for himself at the family home located some miles down the river from New Orleans. Instead, his oldest brother, Henri, took him along on trading voyages on the Mississippi river to and from Illinois. Thus he took to their trade and excelled in it at an early age. Eventually, as he matured, he joined his brothers in the daily operations of the family trading business.
On June 14, 1738 before reaching the legal age of 25, at the urging of all his brothers, he petitioned his older brother, Henry Saucier, successfully for emancipation, so that he could attend to his own affairs without the help of Henry, his older brother . At this time he received his share of his father's estate and his share of Gabrielle's estate on the condition that he could not sell or alienate his property until reaching the legal age of 25 and the court order was signed by his brothers Jean Baptiste and Henry Saucier and 7 other witnesses. He would have been 19 years old at this time.
In 1740, after they made the last payment on Gabrielle's debt, Jean Baptiste Vifvarenne and his Saucier siblings agreed to make a general division of the remaining property of their mothers estate. The brothers drew lots from a hat to decide who got what from the estate. Four small pieces of paper of equal size were rolled up, containing the contents of each share, and placed in a hat, afterwards, it was agreed that Jean Baptiste Vifvarenne, as the youngest brother, would draw for himself and his siblings.
Over a period of time Jean Baptiste Vifvarenne took a larger role in the family trading business traveling between New Orleans and Illinois. It was decided with Henry that he would move to Illinois to be closer to the family business interests and assist his brothers.
Now established in Illinois, residing at St. Phillipe, coinciding with Henri's move with his family back to New Orleans, he moved into Henri's old home there. At Illinois, Jean Baptiste Vifvarenne was now in position to assume some of the endeavors previously handled by his brother Henry, in connection with his brother Jean Baptiste Saucier.
On August 3, 1740, Jean Baptiste Vifvarenne signed a contract of marriage with Mariane Claude Rondeau, daughter of Pierre la Sauvetot (her stepfather) and Catherine Federolle. They were married at Fort de Chartres on August 23, 1740 at St. Philippe parish. Their first daughter Anne Catherine was born in 1741, daughter Veronique was born and baptized on January 24, 1748 at Fort de Chartres and died at a very young age. Her godfather was Francois Saucier, her uncle. Her godmother was Marie Joseph Lacroix, wife of Jean Baptiste Gouin. Their son Jean Baptiste II was born in 1750 and their fourth child and daughter Marie Francoise Vifvarenne was born in 1752 at Fort de Chartres.
He continued as a partner in the family business of trading, that he learned from his brothers, until his death in 1756 at the settlement in Illinois.
Three sons, Jean Baptiste, Louis and Francois, were born to his son Jean Baptiste Vifvarenne II and Genevieve Cardinal at St. Louis, Missouri. All three, the great grandsons of Marie Gabrielle Savary and her second husband, died at early ages, the last being Louis, who died at age 42, never having married.
